My son and I just came back from the lake and we both thought the engine was running very well. We have 1962 crestliner with a 1966 60hp Johnson. We would slow to a crawl as though I was towing a skier then I went to full throttle. The motor reved up and stayed that way until we planed. If I sat up on the bow the boat we planed within a half a minute or less. If we both sat in the front two seats and repeated this, it took up to 3 minutes to get up and planeing. Once plaining, we flew, I don't have a speedometer but it felt like 35-40 mph. Someone told me that if there are nicks in the prop, that could inhibit performance. I just removed the prop to exam it. It is a Michigan and it says on it P J 7:5. I have a Johnson service manual and the recommend five different Props. 9-1/2"x10pitch, 10"x9-1/4", 10"x11", 10"x12", and 10-1/4"x10". What does this all mean??? As I oberved the Prop on the motor, I noticed that there is only 1/2" left before the blades of the prop would hit the bottom of the decavatation fin. I do think a different prop would move the boat along better. Can anyone make some recommendations?? Any comments on this?? I have to say that today the motor seemed good. No skipping no sluggish feeling. I redid the lync and sync and I checked the timing, all is good.
Thank you very much for the input, we're still having fun.
Mike and son Zach, still digging it!!!!! but would like to get the boat running better. :D

Re: my boat propeller

Best case would be if you had a tachometer and could tell us what the WOT RPM is with that prop...
You may have to reposition some weight in the front of the boat if possible...balance makes quite a difference.
If you are interested in getting the most bang for the buck, a set of smart-tabs would be in order. They are available right here on iboats and I have to say, they have been the best addition to my boat I've made.

Re: my boat propeller

Thanks walleyehed, I don't have a tack so making any guesses could stear me in the wrong direction no pun intended. Weight distribution is something we have considered. I have a 12 gal. gas tank that I thought should be moved to the bow of the boat but I'm not sure the engine will work correctly? We have thought of just adding some sand bags in the bow but I don't have a good feeling about that, the fact of adding additional weight. I have seen the smart tabs you mentioned on this site, but what do you think about a hydrofoil by stingray?? Smart tabs are kinda expensive for me. Thanks again.

Re: my boat propeller

you would need a tach to determine which prop is right for your boat it all comes down to rpms

Re: my boat propeller

I checked the manual for rpms and I get 60hp @ 4500rpms. Now you ask if I'm really tuning that?? My guess is that I'm turning 4500rpms or greater only when I'm plaining. Before I get up an plane, I'm running 3500.
