My battery is dead.....prop is down, so the boat is un-towable as the prop will scrape on the ground. How do I lift the prop without the battery ( manually) so I can tow my boat without scraping the prop ? 1997 Mercury Mercruiser inboard 1.94R 3.0L 3 cylinder

You need to raise the outdrive, not just the prop.

1. Replace the battery with a charged one.
2. Remove dead battery, charge it and take it back to the boat.
3. Get in the water, disconnect the trim rams, tie the drive and trim rams in the up position.

get a booster battery and CAREFULLY connect it to your existing battery and raise your drive

One of my pet hates when I was a dealer was receiving a boat for service with a dead battery. It is a PITA!!! Eventually we adopted a policy that if the battery was dead, or even just too low to start the engine, we would sell the customer a new one as part of the service.... NO DISCUSSION!!!!

Be nice to your mechanic, either charge the battery or replace it!

I like that! Agree. Even better; No battery No service. And why do people think no one will steal their boat without a $3 key in it? Easiest thing in the world to hot wire. So many boats get dropped off for service with NO keys.

Sorry achris hit my pet peeves too.

OH BTW what happened to your other cylinder?

Is this an I/O or an inboard? I don't know if your boat has a hydraulic tilt control box, but on mine, it has a screw on the side that when unscrewed it releases the hydaulic pressure so the outdrive can be manually raised. You can tie up the outdrive after raising it with the rear cleats and a rope.

Mercruiser 3.0l were only available as a I/O

Manual release was only on a limited range of trim systems, only the later model Prestolite pumps, he may not have one.

Or you can do the right thing, charge/replace the battery....
