My 90' Chap. 2000SL has no hood latch?

My boat's interior consists of the two back to backs and then has two seats an either side of the motor cover, the motor cover just sits there on nothing but it's own weight, I see no evidence of missing hardware, anyone have an
SL model that can describe the motor cover mounting, it would be realy nice to have a hinge point either at the top to swing up or bottom to swing it back, just wondering if anyone's at least has a latching devise. Thnaks

While not familiar with your boat, I have seen a few brands that have mtor box covers that don't hinge or strap down. They just sit on the floor, or a raised section around the mtoro, and kinda tuck under a trim piece on the top of the transom. If it had any "latch" mechanism, it almost surely would have been a strap from the engine cover to the side of the motor box, or the floor. If not, gravity and the interior trim holds it in place.

Thanks for the reply, I was thinking it was the norm and haven't had any problems with it moving around and your right the sun deck does sorta tuck into it and help hold it in place, this cover takes two men to handle, there's no way I can safely remove it from the boat by myself, the best I can do is tilt it toward the front and let it lean on the back seats. I guess I was just wishing something was missing that would ease the task of working beneath it.

Sorry, that seems to have been a common design for a while. I saw a Bayliner and another Chaparral constructed like that. And leaning it against the seats was the way to "secure" it. I guess you could try to add some hinges to the front of it. But I am guessing the motor cover itself is probably pretty thin material and drilling holes in it might cause more problems?

Mine also just sits there. I like it that way. all I have to do is slide it forward to work on the engine. Makes it nice walking in fron tof it vs on hingest and having to step over the hatch or sqeeze around it.

Where in Kent do you live. What body of water do you boat on? I'm fron Macedonia.

Hi I currently reside in mogadore but work at the University. I like West Branch for my having fun lake, don't know much about Portage lakes but would like try it, heard it's mostly a put put around party lake, I don't like the gooey clay type mud at berlin so I don't go there anymore, Lake Erie and mosquito are my fishin lakes but don't fish from the Chaparral I have another boat for that stuff.
I lifted my motor cover one day but rather than slide it forward I tried something else, I lifted the bottom front upward, with the sun deck fliped aft and pretended as if there were a hinge along the top in back, it was greatly out of the way except had to carefully balance it there, if I were to hinge it thats where it would go along the back, I've also coverted the top cushion part to hinge up which exposes the top of the engine but still can't see into the bilge, I like to check the bilge often for water intrysion it's one of the first things i do after launching.

I can't really address your situation even though I have virtually the same boat EXCEPT mine has the 'sport seating' with the sunpad. I can tell you that my old Glastron had seating like yours. The engine cover was hinged at the front to the floor and flipped forward for access. There was no latch at the back to hold it. Gravity did all the work. Whenever I had something serious to do to the engine I had to unbolt the hinges for better access.

Oh yea. Sorry about that I never even look at the PM folder.
I thought I posted in the restoration forum start to finish with pictures and all. That peticular mod was one of the best things I've done to the boat, it wasn't bad at all, had to relocate the cleats, made the floor from 1/2" plywood and glassed it all in.
On a side note, that ski locker is huge, I can get into it and lie horizontal with room to spare, I'm thinking about taking advantage of some that air space towards the front, maybe put another hatch door on the floor between the bow seats. I already put one vertical hatch door in to access the area below the very front triangle shaped cushion. I can take some photos for ya if you want.

We call em' tree rats around here, my summer boating is over with the Chappy, She's in my workshop and surgery begins when the snow flies.

Well, I was born in Youngstown, grew up outside East Liverpool, and I lived in Kent for 9 months (Dunbar Hall all the way!), in 1992-93, so I know for a fact it doesn't snow this early!

The Chaparral is garaged for the season, and who said there was snow, matter of fact the leaves haven't even begun to fall yet, I still have a boat in the water..........

My previous boat, a 24' Classic, had an engine cover similar to the Chap. It was held in place by two 2-piece slip hinges in the rear. I could tilt the cover up and put a post underneath to keep it up or I could slip the cover to the right, unhooking the two hinges, and remove the cover completely for greater access. The hinges are available in any WM or other supply store, or on-line. Hy

My 2000SL has a padded sundeck over the engine compartment, therefore has no latch. I haven't seen one like you describe.

FWIW, this is an old thread... BUT

My Chap 2000SL has the hump and side seats, I am re-doing it to the "sport" configuration with sun pad and a bench seat... I hate the hump engine cover, and the fact that it is just sitting there, not held in by anything other than gravity!
