My '89 88SPL(overheating)

Ok folks here is another issue. I run the engine for less than 5 minutes and the temperature gauge jumps up to 190deg (I shut it down when it indicates anything much over 170, since i used to run it at about 160). I have attached some photos;

1) pic #6 Water pouring out of weep hole, which i thought was a good indication that all would work well.

2) pic #7 Water coming out of seam at lower unit, this doesn't look right to me.

3) pic #9 water coming out just to the right of bolt and about lower unit oil drain vent screw.

4) pic #11 stream from underside of the top of the lower unit.

5) pic #13 Here is where I monitor the temperature.

Any ideas as to what to look for to get the correct regulated (thermostat) temperatures? I was told 160 is the correct temperature.

The flow of water in your pictures is normal.

The problem is that normal water flow and a working water pump do not indicate anything about the flow of water through the cooling passages of the engine.

The thermostats need to be working and the water passage deflectors have to be placed properly.

140 +/- is the correct temperature.

You should be able to hold your fingers on the cylinder heads for a full three count (but no more) any time the engine is running.

OK, I have to get a service manual before I can do any serious work, you say thermostats, there's more than one?

What do you mean by ".........the water passage deflectors have to be placed properly."?

Water passage deflectors direct the flow of water around the cylinders; they are a frequent cause of overheating problems in crossflow engines and are often overlooked in maintenance of the engines.

The arrows in the diagram show the correct flow of water. The picture shows what happens when they move out of place.

Ok, so let's assume the deflectors are part of the issue, I pull the heads, and then what?

Take a photo and post it for all to review. My personal opinion is that the deflectors need replacing and there is a whole lot of build up in the water passages.
Just my thoughts though.

I don't mind pulling the heads, I'm in no hurry this season, this is a long term project. But if there is build up in the water passages, what am I in for, is that a major defect/repair?

You will have to clean it all out. Let's see what you have first though.
