Hello Guys
Picked up a 84 rude 15hp. Owner claimed it had a new water pump and impeller not long ago.
However nothing from the tell tale...So I got it for 100.00, with a new 6 gal tank plus spare prop :p
Its in really beautiful shape. I'm going to pull the lower off when I get back from my business trip this Saturday.
Since it's a long shaft, I guess thats just one extra step? I'm really an I/O guy and this will be my 1st time wrenching an O/B.
Thanks

My question is.Is the bare metal area normal at the rear of the housing or ?? I havent been able to find any pictures of the UNDERNEATH of the waterpump housing

Looks normal to me if its a bit set in. I don't see why there would be a seal there.. it doesn't look torn, but I'm no pro maybe someone else can concur. Nice looking impeller though. I've seen the vanes bent in all different directions.

hi.
jest its normal look inside.
inside there is NO seal at all.
top of impeler is presing to this metal cup and acts as a seal.
but if you turn out the water pump housing(you will see water pump outlet and inlet for drive shaft), there is seal where drive shaft enters to housing.
this seal is important

While having the gear housing down, attach a water hose to the water tube and CAREFULLY apply pressure. Be sure the motor is hanging vertically. Water should come immediately out the tell tale, and after a bit more pressure, out the thermostat outlet (inside rig) as well. If not, you may have an upper water tube grommet issue and powerhead must be removed.

Thanks for the reply, I do know there is no seal inside the cup o this side.
I was curious about the "lip" of metal toward the rear but have since found pics and this is the way they are.

This is something I plan on doing this weekend. I saw on the lnk above a fitting that reduced from garden hose down to a 3/8th I think barb into a hose to put onto the water tube.
I was thinking either this or a small funnel that fit into the watertube and just shoot the water up it, but I think the fitting secured is the way to go.

I also didnt mention that I dropped the shift rod linkage retaining screw into the bottom end. I hope I can just flip it over or fish it out...
