I own a 4hp Johnson Seahorse (Year 1990)> Whenever i start the motor it will run for about 5 minutes Then cuts out. Many people have told me to squeez the fuel bulb, however the tank is inbuilt. What else could the problem be? and how can i fix it.

Thank you

Hi Tommo

I would suggest you to check:

If the fuel hose is bent somewhere restricting flow.

If the tank cap vent screw is loosened allowing air to the tank to replace the fuel flow. Try running with the cap removed, and you will know. Sure is it runs out of fuel. Other possibilities could be an ignition coil shorting when heated up. Does it produce spark when problem occurs ?

Hi, Tommo.

Three posts on the same problem is two too many.

If you need more help, post additional questions as replies to your original thread.

People who want to help need the whole story in one place.

You don't mention whether or not it is overheating. Does the motor put out a "pee" stream? Can you touch the block between the flywheel and the cylinder head (careful of the spinning flywheel)? It may be cutting out because its overheated in which case you would need to investigate the water pump and impeller.

Hi Tommo
THat sounds like a good price, is that in Australian or American Dollar. In the Library book i borrowed there is a section about Carborators. What are you going to bring to Dora Creek (D.C)? I'll bring a welder, A spanner, Drill Bits, glue, rope, gloves, soap, Tape, and a small screw driver set. By the way i will get petrol from Sydney dad has a countainer. I dont wont to use that petrol with ethenol in it.
See you soon

Re: My 4hp continues to cut out

hey bozza
Im gonna bring a small and large shifting spanner, my cordless drill with the bits to loosen or tighten screws, some wd40, fishing rod and some other tools like pliers.I also found out that that price was Australian and i found a 2.5hp mercury 2002 for 459 bucks(AUS). Oh yeah i saw my grandfather today and asked him about the problem and he said it's something to do with the fuel and maybe the carburator. He told me what the carburator looked like and if we are to drain the water out of it we have to take the top offf the carb. I think we should be able to do it. He had a similar problem to ours on the boat that used to be up at nelson bay.

Cya (keep in touch, the same way by replying to this question only!!!!!)
