My 2cents on the VRO

OK guys well here?s how it was explained to me. The VRO was used from 1984 until 1993, where it became known as the OMS pump. The major differences in them was the amount of oil they used. Prior to 1990 it used 150:1 and 100:1 in 1990-1992. And 60:1 in 1993. Now the part that I found interesting, the old VRO pumps are hard to find, they now all use the ?OMS? system and the 60:1 ratio but are still referred to as the VRO2, they also have improved the diaphragm to allow for E-10 to sit in there all year long and not do any damage. All the old part numbers for the 4 wire pumps are obsolete and replaced with one universal number, and the 3 wire pumps are upgradeable. But I guess Evinrude doesn?t use the OMS or VRO at all anymore? At least my new E-tec doesn?t seem to work at all like my older Johnson. So my question is what is the difference between the new VRO and the OMS pump? Please feel free to correct me if I?m mistaken.

Re: My 2cents on the VRO

The first oil injection systems were Economixers, don't go there. The VRO was the variable pump - hence the "V". It pumped from about 150:1 at idle to about 50:1 at wide open. The VRO2 was the next upgrade. The OMS was the next and it pumps a constant ratio.

The vro2 and the OMS are one and the same, at least according to my seloc outboard book. I too was confused on this. I heard from several people on here refer to it as the OMS, but i went to three different shops checking prices and VRO2 was what came up on their BRP diagrams.

OK that makes sense. But why is the part number the same for the 1990-2000 motors? (5007420) most of them have other part numbers that this one superseded. I'm just trying to find out if I can use an OMS pump? And if so what the part number is, all I can find is the one listed above.

Fuel pump and premix, will take you to the promise land. If you look up your Vro pump number there should be a cross reference to a upgraded pump, at least i would think so.

This link might help with understanding the "VRO/OMS" pumps and how they work.

http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/VRO.html

Your E-TEC is a whole 'nuther ballgame... it uses an electric pressure pump (injector solenoid), controlled by the motor computer, to distribute pressurized oil to the various engine parts inside the crankcase. No oil is mixed with the gas inside the motor like with a traditional 2-stroke.

Re: My 2cents on the VRO

Thanks for the help. I've read that link which is where I got most of my information. I understand now, the VRO changes and the OMS does not. Well now it's just waiting for all the parts, installing them, waiting for spring and praying I did it all right!

Thanks again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
