My engine just went into neutral all by itself. It had been running fine and then all of a sudden it went from forward to neutral all by itself. I came close to running aground on a sandbar last night and know I definitly hit because I felt it, could this have done something to cause this to happen? Sort of grinding the gears? Please help, this is killing me.

And to all of the great people here who have helped in the past, Im not mechanically inclined. I need any feed back explained as simply as you can. I really hope my engine isnt too damaged. Is there any common causes of outboard shifting from forward to neutral by itself?

The propeller has a rubber hub that will break loose if it strikes a submerged objuect. Try painting or scribing a line from the shaft to the edge of the prop. Then, run the boat up to speed several times (or try to) If the lines no longer match up, the hub has torn and will need to be replaced by a prop shop.
