Hi: This is my first posted question so please forgive my spelling. I recently bought a 1988 Evinrude 2.5 HP and knowing from the guy I bought it from that it was froze up ( can't be pull started for love or money). He told me he bought it from an old man ,what ever that means, and the old man told him that this had happend a lot . He said he would spray wd40 in the spark plug holes and let it sit over night and by morning it would turn over and run just fine. Now always wanting a outboard for my jon boat instead of useing my 30lb minkota trolling motor as my my propultion plant I was happy to pay $40.00 for this outboard because it would give me and my son a lot more range because it is set up with a remote fuel feed instead of a small internal tank. So I figured even at its age at least the fuel system would be less gummed up without the internal fuel tank on such a small outboard. I called Evinrude and they help me identify the model year. I also explained to the technition about this inability to pull start the motor. He told me that Evinrude had problems from the very beginning with this and other small outboards up to about 8.0 HP because of the original oil to fuel ratio of 100 to 1 . He told me that I could remove the head cover and clean it out by trying to polish the cylinder bores with fine steel wool and fine oil. He also told me that after I get it freed up to use only a 50:1 ratio instead of the 100:1 ratio as originally recomended by Evinrude. He explained that with so little oil in the fuel that condensation would very quickly develope into rust in the combustion chamber in a matter of 4 to 6 days. Can anyone conferm that this is in fact true or is this much more involed, such as needing to rebuild the entire motor ? Please help with any information you have or could conferm the information I was told. Thanks for taking time to read all this ;Dan.
