Hi: This is my first posted question so please forgive my spelling. I recently bought a 1988 Evinrude 2.5 HP and knowing from the guy I bought it from that it was froze up ( can't be pull started for love or money). He told me he bought it from an old man ,what ever that means, and the old man told him that this had happend a lot . He said he would spray wd40 in the spark plug holes and let it sit over night and by morning it would turn over and run just fine. Now always wanting a outboard for my jon boat instead of useing my 30lb minkota trolling motor as my my propultion plant I was happy to pay $40.00 for this outboard because it would give me and my son a lot more range because it is set up with a remote fuel feed instead of a small internal tank. So I figured even at its age at least the fuel system would be less gummed up without the internal fuel tank on such a small outboard. I called Evinrude and they help me identify the model year. I also explained to the technition about this inability to pull start the motor. He told me that Evinrude had problems from the very beginning with this and other small outboards up to about 8.0 HP because of the original oil to fuel ratio of 100 to 1 . He told me that I could remove the head cover and clean it out by trying to polish the cylinder bores with fine steel wool and fine oil. He also told me that after I get it freed up to use only a 50:1 ratio instead of the 100:1 ratio as originally recomended by Evinrude. He explained that with so little oil in the fuel that condensation would very quickly develope into rust in the combustion chamber in a matter of 4 to 6 days. Can anyone conferm that this is in fact true or is this much more involed, such as needing to rebuild the entire motor ? Please help with any information you have or could conferm the information I was told. Thanks for taking time to read all this ;Dan.

evinrude 2.5
sounds like he was on the right track, look at the cylinder walls to see if they are scored! Have you go it freed up? If so What is compression? At 100:1 I would not think it would lube the engine correctly!

OMC sent letter to all dealers sometime in 1989, to change the 100/1 decal to 50/1 decal on engine cowl and inform owner of change. The Accu-mix 6 gal tanks were changed with a warranty kit. I would fill cylinder with ATF, blaster,or diesel fuel, let set for a few days, and try to free piston. Start engine on a 25/1 mix for 15 minutes, switch to 50/1 mix, and run about half of a can of engine tuner thru it.

I've had a couple eggbeaters that called for 100:1, and I just could never force myself to run 'em that lean. Clanton has the right idea on how to make it work again. I'd suggest a compression test when you finally get it running to see if all those seizings have toasted the piston rings. Good luck!

Evinrude 2.5.

A man gave me a 9.9 because it was "froze up". Thanks to Clanton, I got it free and looked the cylinders over and the bore was shiny clean except for an 1/8" ring of rust around the top of each piston, meaning it froze up from condensation rather than heat!

A new set of rings, bearings, and new impeller and I had a great running 10 horse. Total cost $115.00 including gaskets. Thanks again Clanton, I owe you.

Hell of a post, ain't it?

Happy Boating all. Hal. :D
