I am restoring a 40E75. Almost finished.
Problem is I am running it in a barrel. Ran it for periods less than a minute because I see that it is getting hot. (I know it needs the propeller on) and no water comes out of the exhaust outlet above the water line.
There should be some water spitting out of there when it gets hot.
I disassembled the top cylinder plate to inspect the thermostat. There is no thermostat on these engine.
I looked everywhere! Every diargams. Original Johnson manual makes no mention of it. Parts catalog makes no mention of it and there is nowhere I can where it could be located.
New pump assembly, gearcase rebuilt, all new seals, o-rings,etc. Everything except powerhead. It has good compression and runs well.
Are there Johnson outboards from the 70 that have a design not requiring a thermostat???
