I have a 2001, 5 Hp Suzuki outboard with integrated fuel tank and pull start. I bought this engine from a Suzuki dealer and have had it back in the shop several times. I will put in a new spark plug and the engine will start and run fine. After I shut the engine down and try to restart it, it will not fire. If I put in a new spark plug, it will start right up. Does anyone have any ideas what could cause this problem?

You are probably running too rich, Basso.

Double check your fuel mix: 50:1 is 1 pint of oil to 6 gallons gas, or 2.5oz to 1 gallon.

If that is okay, check the float level in the carb and the gap on your plug.

Stop throwing away perfectly good, expensive spark plugs. A fouled plug can be cleaned and regapped.

Good luck. :)

Re: Must replace spark plug after each use

JB, Thanks for the advice. I did measure the oil which on this engine is 100:1 and I have tried to clean and reuse the plugs. I have dried them, I have cleaned them, and they are Coffee with cream color when I take them out and they are not wet. They just won't seem to spark. I have checked the float and have plenty of fuel getting through. Actullay, when I put in a new plug, the engine will start and run for several hours. But if I shut the engine down and try to restart it, it won't spark. Do you think the magneto could be cranking out too much of a charge and ruining the plug?  Thanks Again.

Have you tried another brand of plug for your application? I have had better luck with other makes in certain motors. Just a thought...

Hmmm. A tan, dry plug is not fouled.

There is something else wrong. Try a different make plug, as FP suggests. I always use Champions.

If that doesn't do it it is beyond my simple knowledge.

Good luck. :)

Thanks for the advice. I will try to lean out my mixture and try different plugs. I have tried Autolite, champion and NGK thus far. I have the engine at the dealers and he has had it for a week now. Still no word.

Take a plug that you have used to someone with a plug tester & get them to check it out.It will at least confirm that the plug is good or bad & take that out of the equation  .Check the kill switch the contacts may be sticking.Im not sure what else it could be...
