Hi everyone. I'm a first time Boat owner and This is my first post!
I have a 1988 88hp Evinrude SPL. electric trim and tilt. And use premixxed gas/oil 50/1. I only took the boat out once right after I bought it and it seemed to run fine(besides it didn't idle very well) That was almost 2 years ago. Now that I totally cleaned, painted, and made the boat like new I'm having problems with the engine.

1st problem is my engine seems to be overheating. I started it up with muffs and there was water coming from the engine. It was not a solid stream but kind of like a fast dripping. About 1 minute or less later and a Solid Alarm went off. I turned the engine off and just left it.

2nd problem is the Tach is not working. It did work when I bought the boat. I put a new tach in and now its not working? It is getting 12 volts. My battery seems to be charging. Battery was 12.25 before start and @12.5 while running.

So now I'm going to put in a water pump kit and a new rectifier and see what happens.
I plan on ordering all the parts from here on iboats but I'm not sure what to
order. The parts listed on the iboats store are listed for 90hp(thats the same right?) Anyway part #'s and any other ideas to solve these problem would be much appreciated.

Aloha Jon

Thanks Tashasdaddy. I forgot to ask. Will I need to order any other gaskets or seals for the lower unit? Also. Is there any other sealers I can use besides OMC 1000 sealer for the water pump insallation?

Do you have a Service Manual? If not, they are a wise investment. Be sure to flush the cooling system while you have the lu down, grease the splines of the driveshaft, clean out the water intake area, and be careful that the grommet on top of the impeller housing does not get stuffed into the housing when installing lu, this restricts waterflow. You will see what I mean when you begin. I use the can of BRP Gasket Sealing Compound with the brush built into the lid. The following may help if it is your first time.

In regards to your charging issue, it does sound like the rectifier is shot. Refer to Joe Reeves thread in the FAQ for testing. Ignition components are non refundable.

i use just a dab of sealer, just enough to hold the gasket in place. i put it on with my finger tip.

Thanks for the help guys. Yes I do have a manual and I've read through it many times.
I've ordered the water pump kit and the rectifier and will be installing it when it arrives next week.
I will keep this thread updated with the results.

Thanks again. JOn

Re: Multiple Problems with my 1988 88SPL

This really stinks!:(

So I installed the new water pump kit and the rectifier and it seems that both my problems gotten worst.

First the water pump. Everything when together nicely. I'm sure the impeller went in the right way. Anyway, I started the engine up and water was coming out the tell tale. Everything seemed fine about 30 sec to a min later the stream from the tell tail turned into fast dripping and then the water almost completely stopped coming out? I shut the motor down before it had a chance to overheat. What does that mean?

2nd My battery is not charging at all now. The instructions that came with the rectifier said that the 2 yellow wire are interchangable? Is that true? From the searches I've done I'm thinking that my stator might be bad. $200 OUCH!

I don't know where to go from here. Please help me

I guess that I'll take off the head covers and take a look at the water passage ways and water deflecters
Any other ideas would be helpful

Did you flush the cooling system while the lower unit was down like i mentioned to ensure that there was not a water restriction in the water line to the t stat housing?
