Msd ignition on a 1969 85hp starflite engine?

I have 1968 Glasspar Avalon with a 1969 85hp starflite. I have read older posts about guys putting a msd box on instead of the original amplifier box. Has anyone recently done that same thing? I was having some mis-firings and completely dying out sometimes with the original ignition. So i installed a msd streetfire box. I got it to run, but not good enough to push away from the dock and run it. I have a new old stock dist cap coming to try next for the misfires issue.
I'm wondering if anyone else had success with this msd box?
