Moving engine from floor to stand

I just bought a '75 850 that I managed to get home and is currently laying on my shop floor. I am going to build an engine stand and some sort of lift mechanism to get up up on the stand so I can start breaking it down.
My question is this. I have the lift eye that threads into the flywheel. Is it safe to lift the entire motor with this or is that too much stress to put on the lift?

That is exactly what the eye is for, MM. Your challenge is how to lift it. . .cherry picker, tractor front loader, "A" frame and come-along, etc.

Ok. I thought maybe it was just for lifting the powerhead as opposed to the entire motor.

You can also remove the gearcase to lighten it, and have a friend grab 1/2 of it. Those IL4s are not that heavy....

I have a 115 that weighs in at 348 lbs. I lifted mine with a roll around engine hoist without any issues. The flywheel threads are plenty strong for this.

I bought myself one of these "back savers". Turns out to be one of my better $200.00 spends.:

It picks up the 850's with ease.
And no I have no affiliation with the manufacturer or whatever.

That looks sweet. I'll have to look into that.
Edit: BTW yesterday, I put a question to you in your PT&T Question thread. *I would love to know the answer when you get the time. *I'll be tackling this very soon.

That good to hear. Was that the whole tower, lower unit included. To be honest, my main concern was not the flywheel or the threads but the stress being place on the crank and bearings.

Re: Moving engine from floor to stand

Not having a threaded insert for my Mercury 115 inline six years ago, I used a nylon strap around the entire power head unit under the lower cowl plate and attached it to a come-a-long attached to a ceiling truss and lifted it away. Not a problem. Some times you have to be creative and make use of what you have available... Now I have a portable engine hoist and it is so simple it isn't even a challenge anymore...
