Mounting stuff on my Dash?

Looking at mounting some stuff on the dash like a GPS and compass. I have a Bayliner 185 BR. Do I just mount 4 screws flush with a drill? What is the proper way to do it. I am a bit hesitant to drill any holes, hence why I am asking first.

Thanks ahead of time for all the help.

Screws will work fine, but of course once the holes are there they are there. I use a cupholder mount and it works great, but that's on a party barge. Don't know how well it would work on your rig. Do you have any rails in close proximity to the helm? There are various rail mounts available for electronics. That's what I use for my GPS when I'm fishing and it's rock solid.

I mount my fishfinder with velcro so I can switch between boats, works like a charm, you can see it my dash pic of the 90 chap in that other thread on dash pics.

Re: Mounting stuff on my Dash?

i don't have a compass short of my gps. no speed, short of my gps. the gps does at all in my case.

i'm opposed to drilling holes if not absolutely necessary too. here was my answer.

the gps is velcroed in place. ya can get some at yer local hardware store. least that's where i got mine at. stick one half on the boat, the other half on the devise. it works really good. yes, i have had it fall off before, but not very often. + if i'm not using my gps. the remote for the stero goes there too. i also use the velcro idea in my van. any items that have velcro as the way to attach it can be interchanged with other items... works good for cell phones too. while not in the pic. my cell phone resides right next to the indash radio. velcroed of course...

edit, guess ya beat me to a70.... ;)

ziggy that Ifinder is the cats ***** I have the colored version too, just love the speedometer on it. It was the only I could find that you could work the buttons without you hand covering the display.

I like that Idea MUCH better. Velcro it is.

as ya can see, i'm in the speedo mode in the pic. :D. works great for me too. especially since my boat don't have a speedo. i've pretty much got my speed down now a days though. my rpms is almost the same as the speed i'm going. no idea how that happens, but in my case it is.. i usually use the gps for location on my lake at night. keeps me in the water if ya know what i mean.. things look so different at night. the gps is a real life saver at that point... i use it in the dark mode too so it don't make my eyes bleed for too much light off the devise ruining my night vision..

spikeitaudi, looks like on your rig either far right or left of the dash would be a great place for a gps to me... maybe the starboard side, right next to the power outlet. ;). my power outlet is just to port of my indash. works great for powering in the gps...

Re: Mounting stuff on my Dash?

Most GPS Dash Mounts have a squarish base. I use a small square of velcro on each corner...

Re: Mounting stuff on my Dash?

I have 3M Industrial Velcro so I will use that for sure.

Ziggy, which GPS is that?I like the size.

I was going to get a Richie compass but I think the GPS might do better. Also, have a MIdland Nautico handheld radio is which I will velcro up.

Thank you all for the advice. I am so glad I asked before I drilled. That would of been a big mistake.

If you dash is part of the cuddy and you do use screws, remember to seal the screw's threads.

Thanks, for the advice. I don't have a cuddy, its a Bowrider. But regardless that is good info for later. :) Going to use velcro also.

it's a lowrance ifinder h20c. it's been a respectable unit. i've had it for 3+ years now w/o any problems... my only suggestion would be to spurge on getting a color one. they are just plain easier to see than the black and white versions.. my previous gps was black on white only...

just got me a new boat magaizine the other day. they were covering gps's... they got some new ones out that make the h20c look dated... technology just keeps getting better and better.... i think???

Re: Mounting stuff on my Dash?

Anybody have any advice on a good portable GPS that is cheap? Cheap meaning a good buy for the price. Not meaning 50 bucks.
