I need instruction on the proper mounting of
my 2000 Suzuki 25 HP 4 stroke outboard motor.
The motor does have tilt and trim.Upon any acceleration the front of the boat rises and I cannot get the boat on top of the water properly. My boat is a 15ft 48 in bottom duracraft.

Pleasureboater,

I can't see your rig so I'm jousting in the dark here.

1. You said the engine has power trim? Is the pin that runs through the holes in the mounting bracket in the lowest hole (closest to the boat)? If not, run the tilt up, take the pin out and put it in the lowest hole.
Try the rig with the trim run all the way down-foot of engine as close to the bottom of the boat as possible.

2. How is your boat loaded? Put more of the load in the front.

3. Is this too much engine for the boat-what is the boat rated for?

Re: mounting instructions

I appreciate your reply. All recommendations have been completed. The boat is rated for a 50 hp but I'm afraid with the weight of the 4cycle Suzuki 25hp, my weight is 240 and the two heavy batteries it may be overweighted in the rear. Will changing the propeller from a 3 blade to a 4 blade help with this problem?

What is your recommendation for adding weight to the front of the boat? What would you use for weight?

Re: mounting instructions

Hey Pleasure
As DJ said check on the power trim. If you boat mostly alone I would try to move some weight forward. If the gas tank is portable install a longer hose and move it forward. Same thing with the batteries. Put longer power leads on them and move them forward too. Another weight suggestion would be to fill up some water jugs and place them up front. Before I would change the prop I would install a Doel Fin or other comparable product. I have one on my boat and it works great. Use the search function at the top of the page and search out "hydrofoils". Great info on them here.

Good Luck

Another thing you might want to look at is where the cavitation plate on the lower unit is in relation to the bottom of your boat. It needs to be even with bottom of your boat. I posted about this over the weekend and thats what I was told. You may need to raise the engine on the transom which is what I had to do and it made a big difference in getting up on plane. Next is a Stingray fin.

EF,

You took the words out of my mouth so many times people will put a long shaft on a small short transom (flat bottom or semi-v) boat.

Check your documentation for the motor more than likely you should have a short shaft for your boat (15") if its a long shaft (20") you need to either raise the transom or change the shaft.

Raising the transom enough can be difficult and imposssible on a heavy motor like yours.

I don't know about Suzuki but Mercury sells a kit to change the shaft. I recently priced one for an 8HP and it was 400 installed.

Check that cavitation plate if it is several inches below the bottom of the boat you will have to make some change to get the most out of your motor.

Good luck

:)
