motors running rough

I have a 1977 9.9hp evinrude. i can get it running but it is rough. i keep it running by playing with the choke. can someone give me an idea on how to fix this. thanks

Hey Waylon,<br />With the limited information you gave, I'd guess you have a fuel delivery problem. Check to be sure you have fresh 87 octane fuel pre-mixed with a premium outboard oil. Then check everything connected with the fuel delivery system (tank properly vented, no air leaks in any of the lines or fittings, properly operating fuel pump, and a squeaky clean carburator. Ditto Backlash on fuel problems. A leaking needle and seat will give symptoms like that.

Check your compression.Always the first stop in any troubleshooting.This engine 110 or so should be good. If all looks good there then this is a classic carb clean and rebuild.Here's why.Because the engine will continue to run with the choke pulled out you know you have fuel in the float bowl.Thats not to say that you shouldn't give the rest of your fuel system a good going over while your at it.
