Hello all I have a 99 motorguide 43lb thrust 12 volt motor. When i put it on #5 and #4 speed it goes for a couple of secs and then kicks off. If i let off of the throttle switch for a couple secs it will work for a little bit then kick off again. I think the rotary speed control is going out but am not for sure how to prove it. any help or other ideas of what to look at would be greatly appreciated.

Re: motorguide trolling motor

Bassman, look under the pedal for any kinked wires or connections that may have come loose. Sometimes a wire can come loose or start to break inside the insulation, and make momentary connection when it gets jostled around. Happened to me & luckily I just had to reconnect a wire. Not the same symptoms as you but same principle.

BTW, does yours have a three-position toggle switch on the left side of the pedal, and if so do you know what that's for? Mine is a motorguide three that came with the boat & I have no documentation for it. thanks & good luck,
jtw

If your 5 speed switch is going out, it's easy to replace. Something like $20 from trollinmotorparts.com. I've done it and ordered from them.
Check the voltage at the switch when it's on 4 or 5 to see if it's getting power. The 3 position toggle should most likely be a constant power, high power, and momentary switch.

D

Hey Bassman,
Had this happen a few years ago in a tournament. Luckily we had a Motorguide rep there. It was the breaker unit back by the batteries. They wear down over time and when you heat them up with a good voltage pull they trip off.
He replaced ours and we were fine the rest of the year.

Re: motorguide trolling motor

Hey guys just to keep you all updated I bought a new 50 amp breaker today and installed it seems that the old one was the problem although it has not been tested on the water yet hopefully this weekend.
