The last time I took my boat out my trolling motor was making a horrible noise I thought it was a bearing but it was a corner of the magnet was broken off. What can I do? This trolling motor is not very old its an 82lb 24v motorguide digital series. Now with the broken corner off its even a worse noise.

Replace the magnet housing and seals, I'd probably do the bearings too since it's noisy.

Re: motorguide trolilng motor broken magnet

I bought a MinnKota 4hp about 20 years ago which let loose the same way, the upper magnet came unglued and fell onto the armature. The magnet cracked in three pieces. I tore the motor down, sanded and cleaned the housing, removing all the original glue on both the magnet and the housing. I glued the broken magnet back together with marine Tex carefully making sure it was a perfect fit, once it dried, I re-epoxied the magnet back into the housing. I reassembled the motor and its still fine today.

The proper fix is most likely to buy a whole new motor housing with magnets already installed but a home done fix is often possible. I've also tossed small bits of magnets and done without them with no noticeable ill effects too.

If it didn't cost so much I would tell you to throw it away and buy a Minn Kota. When you say it broke off do you mean to pulled the armature out of the casing and got the piece out and it is still making the noise???
