I have a boat with a 1986 5.7 liter 260 H.P mercruiser and its been sitting for three years. Today I just got two new group 31 cranking batteries from battery plus that together have cranking amps at about 1850. But when I turn the key to start the engine all I get is a tick each time I turn the key. Oh the boat isn't mine its my grandfathers and he wants to get it fixed so if the engine happens to be seized how much does a rebuild or new engine run around. Thanks any advice would be great.

Re: Motor won't crank

assuming it was winterized properly
a click could be corroded batt cable ends especially at the block neg.
bad slave, bad solenoid, bad connection at each of these
clunk/crunch could be a seized motor and you would need to pull the plugs to check

Electrical problems go tick and click
Seized engines go CLUNK, real loud and heavy sounding.

I'm completely new to large boats. I have a boat that you pull start. but my question is there any chemical that I should clean the connections with. and how do you get corrosion off do you sand it or what i'm not quite sure. any replies would be great. Thanks Dan

Re: Motor won't crank

If any engine I owned sat undisturbed for 3 years, the first thing I would do is put some oil in each cylinder throught the spark plug hole and turn the engine several times by hand. If it moves rather freely, then I would replace all the spark plugs and hand crank it some more before attempting to start with the starter.

This isn't why you are getting a click, but by slowly turning the engine like this, any bit of corrosion could be loosened and damage therefrom minimized before fast cranking/startup.
