Re: Motor wont crank and trim/tilt not working
Like erie said, start with ensuring that you have adequate power to the engine. The fact that the trim doesn't work tells you right off that you have a "getting power to the engine" problem. Makes troubleshooting a lot easier than just it won't turn over.
Get a voltmeter if you don't have one. They can be purchased from Harbor Freight, digital, fine instruments for $5. Or radio shack. WWW might have them.
Go to the starter solenoid. The starter solenoid is where the battery power cable mounts on the engine, large terminal, red wire. The large red wire on the other side of the solenoid goes directly to the starter. Now you know where you are.
Put the meter on a DC Volts range higher than 12v. 20v is a popular range on meters. Put the red meter lead on the end of the stud of the solenoid where the battery red wire connects. Put the black wire on the engine block somewhere ensuring that both points penetrate any sealant or paint so you can get a metal to metal reading. If you don't read above 12.5 volts, go back to your battery and check the voltage there. If still low fix your battery; recharge, buy a new one, whatever and while you are at it, and your cables are removed, clean them up inside and out, like erie said.
Let us know what you find.
