I own a 1989 Honda 15 horse outboard. I had the impellar replaced because it was not pumping water. Now the motor pumps some water but the stream does not appear strong. The motor will start fine and run for a short time then shut down. I can restart and repeat the process. Is the motor shutting down due to overheating or is there another problem?

Maybe the new impeller needs to be broken in, it could be adding some strain to the motor, I experinced this when I changed the impeller on my 115 hp merc, after a day or so of periodical running the impeller losed up some and the motor ran fine. Only a guess here. but hey who knows

Check the engine temp when it shuts down. You should be able to hold your hand on the block between the cylinder head and the flywheel for 5 sec of so without burning yourself. If its too hot its probably overheating and shutting down. Look for a stuck thermostat or obstructions in the coolant passages. If its not overheating you may have heat sensitive ignition malfunctions or just fuel supply issues. Try to start narrowing it down.

Was the old impeller destoyed with pieces missing? some old pieces may be blocking water passages if your only getting a small stream it may need to be checked out
