I am thinking about buying a motor without a title, this motor has been through a few guy without a title. Does anyone know if I can get a lost title, or what I could do. It is a 1985 motor.

No title is needed for a motor, just the boat. However, get a bill of sale when you buy it.

How old is the motor? Motors didn't have titles until pretty recently. Disregard; just read it's an 85. Don't think they were titled then

depends on where you live. Missouri where I live has titled motors for I don't know how long. I know at least back to the 50's as I recently bought two 50's models with original titles. Illinois just 20 some miles from here no. Don't know what state you are in, but contact there DMV on the internet and you can find out.

No titles for motors here in Florida. Just tell them you bought it here. Now, boats are a different story.

Texas is especially sticky about outboard titles.

in Texas, then either don't buy it, seller gets title, or contact registration people, and find out what you need. if you have a friend in another state, who will give you a bill of sale, you can try it, but if it comes up stolen in Texas, it is your problem with them.

Proceed cautiously, unless you can get one of the previous owners to sign an affadavit that it's never been titled in Tejas. State Parks&Wildlife does boat/motor titles here...if the paperwork is weak it can be a real nightmare. They want every penny in sales tax they can get/collect and sometimes aren't nice about it. We need a new guv. Can you say Friedman?

no title req'd for a motor in minnesota.
Just pay registration/license fees (tax) on boat and trailer,
and everyone's happy.
Even if you are missing a bill of sale, they even have a form for that.

In New Jersey, there are no titles for Boat Trailers or outboard motors. If you were bringing a non-titled motor into Texas, I would guess you take the bill of sale to the DMV and apply for a new title. At least that is how it would work in NJ, if we had titles for OBs.

I am in Texas

I am also in Texas.
I went through a nightmare with an untitled motor (and boat) from TN. You can contact TPWD and try to get the CURRENTLY registered owner (assuming it is in TX) and make contact with that person...if you can find them...and tell them you need a bill of sale from them and explain why. If the motor is coming from another state, try the equivalent agency for that state.

I managed to locate the true, previous owner on mine and he had no problem helping me. Otherwise, TPWD can tell you options.

Even with my law enforcement credentials, it took me a total of three weeks to get the boat, motor, and trailer mess resolved.

Good luck.

I'm also in Texas. My boat is registered, but not titled. It was not required at the time I moved here (1992-ish). None of my outboards are titled. What are the ramifications for not having titles, particularly when on the water? The boat can be titled easily, since I still have my original Florida title, but I have never had titles for the motors.

Here in Indiana all they want to know is the size of the motor and boat so they can tax you appropriately, boat and trailer ar registered and tagged no one cares about the motor or where it came from.

Good luck.

If I had to guess... the main reason for titles on motors is tax revenue. I'm pretty sure a TPWD agent or marine patrol unit of a local/state agency are probably the only ones that would issue a citation for untitled motors.

It would likely surface in events of dispute or theft. I just made sure I was legal.

In texas do they ask to see the title of the motor when you are out on the water and do you need to keep papers in the boat with you

Re: motor without a title

I doubt it. Texas does not require registration papers on motor vehicles. I do not recall a requirement for boats/motors either. The registration on the side of the boat - and current registration decal - is usually sufficient. However, there is a small license-sized registration card that the operator is required to carry and show upon demand. I just looked at mine. It has the HIN and TX registration...nothing about the motor.

After reviewing the TPWD website, I'm pretty sure the motor titling is a revenue stream. But I was wrong once before. It was a Tuesday.

Yep it's a revenue thing in Tejas...more tax dollars/fees needed for every agency. TPWD mails you a registration/certification card that you keep in the boat...last one I got after they started requiring separate titles for boats and motors lists info on my boat and also brand of outboard registered with it. Don't know what the fine/fee is for not having this with you or having something untitled on the water, but I bet it wouldn't be cheap. Some TPWD wardens are sticklers and tough, some are not...I hear it's expensive to find out though. Keep your papers in your water-tight/dry bag in the boat.
