Dear forum,
I own a 1988 mercury 90hp 3 cylinder outboard. The other day I went out to start my motor with the ears attached for a water supply. The motor would turn over great, but would not start, sounded like no spark. I put a spark tester on each cylinder and had no spark, but then I moved the shifter lever back and forth and then into the neutral position and it popped as if there was finally spark there. I know there are three safety devices on board, the mercury tilt switch on the motor, the neutral start switch in the remote control and the kill switch on the remote control with the lanyard attached. Can someone explain to me how the neutral safety switch works, is it a normally open or a normally closed switch when in the neutral position as well as the other two devices for outboard motor protection? How do I check these to make sure they are doing the job?
