I am new to boating and have still not mastered how to correctly trim my motor. How do I know when the motor is correctly trimmed? Do I want to be at max rpm even when at half throttle?
Thank you
[*]null

Re: Motor trimming

Trim to where you get the most speed around the max rpm's. If you are getting max rpm's at half throttle, you are trimmed too high, or you have the wrong prop. When you get it running as fast as you can, next to max rpm's, listen and look. Learn that sound so you don't have to keep looking back to see if it is trimmed too high, and watch that tach.

That sound is key, you will get to know it. Also when you are trimmed too high you will likely start to wiggle a bit more. I also think checking the prop size would be worth it, if you are at half throttle at max rpm you need to increase your pitch. ;)

Re: Motor trimming

Trim your motor out till the steering wheel has no tourqe on it and feels neutral and light. It is for comfort not speed in a Lund Pike.
corm

Re: Motor trimming

Hmmm. Maybe I am unique. I don't always seek top speed. I usually want to run at cruise, about 3/4 throttle, or 5000rpm on my Suzi 70 4 stroke. I find that the best trim, on my boat, is not the same at that speed as it is at WOT.

I set the throttle at 3/4 and trim for max rpm, back down as required to get 5000, and fine tune the trim for the best rpm/mph ratio. Then I get the best mpg at a pretty fast speed. That gives me 30-33mph and about 6gph, or 5+mpg.

If I want WOT, I need to trim her out a bit more to get max rpm.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Bingo... Right to all of the above... a boat trimmed right is just like a woman... purrs & cruises... LOL, OK it late at night & time for bed plus I thought I would mess your minds just a little bit!!!!! LOL

Now back to the question.... max speed, good RPMs, good handling... these are the aspects to a properly trimmed boat... depending on your setup... You just know by the sound & scanning both tach & speedo for maximum effeciency. Depending on water conditions... which are subject to change at any given second/minute.

When I am trimmed up & cruising, I am constantly adjusting the trim depending on water, boat chop, etc.. this takes a lot of trial & error but you will learn it & anticipate it as you cruise depending water, traffic & load in boat.

Best thing to do is take out by yourself with no one on board & practice trimming technique & getting to know how your boat handles... then put passengers in & try it that way to compensate for weight changes & passenger comfort.

It is not that hard... have fun!!!
