motor tries to turn

I've been trying out a 98 25HP tiller handle Mercury on my 14 foot boat. As it's going across the lake it tries to pull away and tries to turn right. I've adjusted the fin above the prop to the right as far as it will go. It helped a little but still tries to pull away. I've movied the motor back and forth on the transom but did not have any effect. Is there another way to adjust this motor so it won't pull away.

When you say you have moved the motor "back and forth on the transom...are you speaking of left to right? Be sure you motor is centered on the transom and adjust the trim pin one notch. Those things coupled with you adjusting the trim tab might help.

Bob

I moved it left and right. I was told by a mechanic at the marina some times you have to do that. So I gave it a try with no luck. He said some times this motors pull to the side but I have never had one do this till now. Maby I got lucky with the others.

try adjusting the trim pin up one notch as stated before.

anyone here with tilt/trim and a tiller can recocgnize the difference in pull when the boat is properly planed out.

there my be a tensioner bolt near the pivot that at least will releave the strain on your arm.
Older mercs used to have what I call a damper
arm that took out some of the torque steer. When adjusting the torque fin try a little at a time.
As I recall my 50 Evinrude tiller runs pretty straight but is touchy. My 50 Merc. Tiller has fairly severe torque steer but a great damper.

might be a dumb observation, but if you are running a light 14 footer with tiller steering, it might be your weight that is at issue. Maybe if you center yourself a bit more, the boat will not be stern heavy on the starboard side -- and the motor will be less inclined to push the boat in that direction.

Re: motor tries to turn

I moved the trim pin one notch and it did take the pull out. So now how do I stop the bow from bouncing up and down? Would one of those fins on the foot help?
