Motor support bar or not?

I recently bought an old 1977 Ebb Tide 16' bass boat that has an Inline 6 cylinder 115 HP Mercury outboard.

The previous owner apparently positioned the boat forward on the trailer so that the after-most roller lines up just aft of the transom - in order to use a "motor support bracket". (The bottom end of that support bracket has a "U" shape that hooks over that roller.

My problem is that now the trailer tongue is very heavy - I estimate it has about 300 lbs weight on it. I am a large man / consider myself to be strong, and it takes everything I can muster to lift the tongue at all!!!

The 115 Merc has the old style tilt/trim cylinders that mount outside the transom clamps, and the transom clamps have the tilted up position brackets that support the motor in the fully tilted position.

My question is should I live with the heavy tongue weight (and missing support from the rear roller) so I can use the motor support bracket accessory while towing my rig, or it it OK to tow with the old style "up position lock".

I feel like the boat fits on the trailer better when shifted aft - taking advantage of the aft roller - and the tongue weight is much improved. But I am wary of the old style Merc "tilted up support brackets".

Regards to all, Gold Bear. ;)

Ahoy, Gold Bear!

Move the boat back until you have 7-10% of the GVW on the tongue. Then adapt your support and trailer to support the foot. That support is a great safety item for your transom UNLESS ground clearance is enough to safely tow with the leg down.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Re: Motor support bar or not?

Thanks for the prompt reply J.B. With the boat shifted aft so the transom set right above the aft roller the trailer tongue weight "feels good", I estimate 150 lbs, and my rig weighs about 1500 lbs, so I feel I am in pretty good shape there.

The after roller is bolted onto the after side of the trailer's rear most transverse cross member, so it will be difficult to fabricate another bracket to adapt the motor support to.

I was hoping that someone would tell me that they "towed their rig with the old type Mercury set-up that way for years and never had a problem".

I guess it is time to fire up the welding rig??

By the way, the motor is VERY close to the ground in the down position.

Thanks again for the rely.

Best Regards, Gold Bear ;)

Bear,

Just take the U shaped piece off the support brakett and weld a piece of light angle iron to it. Then place it against the trailer fame just under the rear roller. that shoud hold it. I run a bungy cord around the end of mine and the skeg of my motor.

My apologies, Gold Bear! I just forgot. A senior moment, I guess. I will make myself a note and perhaps I will remember tomorrow.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Ahoy, Gold Bear!

Well, I got the picture, then realized that I don't know how to post it, so I will describe it and you can Email me if you want to see it.

I bolted a 6" piece of PVC pipe that fit the curved end of the support to the lower edge of the rear crossmember of the trailer. It is just below the roller.

If you want to see the pic, Email me at jbshideout@aol.com

Red sky at night.. .
JB :)

Re: Motor support bar or not?

J.B. and Ranger 354,

Thank both of you for your reply. Both of you have given me valuable "food for thought" that I really appreciate.

J.B. I had already considered buying a short roller - I have seen ones (in stores) that are about 8" long overall - and adating that to fit under the original aft-most roller. Your suggestion to use PVC pipe is an excellent idea.

Additionally, I have had thoughts of removing the "U" shaped end from the support arm and adapting some sort of a bracket. That may be a more compact modification (which would give the trailer better overall ground clearance).

For now I am going to let these ideas percolate, and also consider availability of materials to accomplish this modification.

In any event I plan to do something so I can use the support, as it seems the general consensus is the motor support is a must for towing.

Best regards to all,

Gold Bear ;)

Re: Motor support bar or not?

I totally agree to try and use the motor support, but if it is not feasable, the Mercury style lock is just fine for towing. My parents and I used it on a 71 Merc 1250 from 71 - 89. if you use the tilt lock, use the power trim down botton to put a little pressure on the lock so that it doesn't bounce on the road. It's the bouncing while towing that causes the most strain on the transom.

The "Transom Saver" I have bolts to the back cross member of the trailer. I am getting a digital camera this week and I'll take a picture of it for you if you want to see it. My E-Mail address is skier@gte.net
