motor stalls

Hi friends, just took the 16 footer I restored for its maiden voyage today!Didnt get very far.The motor is a 1987 Evinrude E88MSLUS in great shape with OMC motor control.I dont know any specifics on this control but learned to use it in the driveway this past fall. The choke is a lever which pulls up,then snaps back down into place when the motor is warmed. The sole control lever can then be moved forward or reversed while squeezing the handle, but only when the aforementioned choke lever is snapped back into place.Well, today the motor kept stalling before the choke lever could be snapped into place. The motor started well and purred pretty while lowered in the water, just kept dying when I tried to snap the choke back.Everything worked well in the driveway in Sept.when it was 70 degrees, today it was 30.Can that have something to do with it? I put in new gas and oil. Also, whats that knob below the key slot on the control unit? When I turned it while the motor was running in the driveway, there was no response. And it doesnt have a point where it stops rotating,I can turn it either way forever. Does that have something to do with the problem.Any help would be apprec. Thank you.

Re: motor stalls

Thats the warm up lever. The primer (choke) is activated when you push the key in.

Good luck!
