I have a 1989 XR4 Blackmax runs great if you can get it in gear. I haven't pulled the carbs off because I was told when I bought this that the carbs were factory set and could not be changed. I did adjust the linkage for the idle but it still stalls.

Welcome aboard. Start by posting the motors serial number. However it sounds lite the shift interrupt switch which points to shift cable adjustment

I haven't heard of carbs not being able to be adjusted. As for the stalling problem, this usually means gummed up jets.

Some of the early V6 Mercs had fixed idle jets. You will need to look at them to be sure. Also, some of the carb floats for the early V6 motors are NLA, so you will need to reuse them, if your motor is one of those.

Carbs do get dirty, and need to be cleaned.
