Hi
Can anyone tell me? I have a 1985, 55 hp Johnson motor. Is it true that a 2002, 40 hp Johnson or mercury motor can be the same or better speed than the 55 hp? I have been told because the motor is new and that now they are more fuel efficient that a 40 hp would perform better.

Thanks myvitaloca

Re: motor speed

Howdy.

Unless your engine is sick, it still makes 55hp.

55 is a bigger number than 40, and will do more work than a 40. On equal boats it would be faster,if that is what you mean by performance.

The 2002 Johnson or Mercury 40 could be one of the EFI 4 stroke 40s. It would still be only 40hp, but would be smoother, quieter and cleaner than your 2 stroke 55, and use a lot less fuel. To some folks that is superior performance.

Re: motor speed

A horsepower is still a horsepower. The difference is where it's measured. Newer engine horsepower is measured at the prop. Older engine horsepower was measured at the crankshaft. I'm not sure when this was changed, but I believe it was in the eighties. The difference is about 10%.

c/6

Hooty

Re: motor speed

Hi
Thanks to Red Sky at Night JB and to Hooty for your help about the speed of the motors. Now I have another question? What are the metal constructed frames you see in the water and boats are suspended from them.I know they hold the boat up out of the water I would like to be able to buy one, but I do not know what they are called?
Thanks for your help once again
myvitaloca

myvitaloca,

They are boat hoists.

The most popular brand is "Shore Station". Built by Midwest Industries, Ida Grove, Iowa.
