motor slips out of gear while in Fwd gear

I took my boat out today with its 1970 Evinrude 40 hp motor. I put it in and it acted like I had no reverse when I gave it gas. But I put in Forward gear and it was ok at this time. we went over five miles down river just fine. when it whent Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeee I said we must have broke the shear pin on the prop but it was ok. So we started it and run it at low throtle it pushed the boat.if you give it to much gas it cluches out. Model # 40053a
