Motor shuts off when idle position is engaged.

Motor: 89 Evinrude 90 HP VRO

The motor starts and runs fine. Idles around 650 RPMs when put into gear.

Problem:
When I take the motor out of gear the RPM's drop to around 500 and the motor stalls. Pulled the spark plugs and they look fine. I am thinking that the idle needs to be turned up a little. Is there anything else I should look into? Also, if the idle needs adjustment, what should the RPM's be in the idle postition?

you can turn idle up to 750 in gear, and 600 idle. if this doesn't cure it. you may have a carb problem flooding out coming back to idle, or a link & sinc problem with the carbs not cutting back in sinc with the timing.

With the engine warmed up .

Adjust the idle speed screw , to between 600-700 rpm's.

In forward gear.

So, it sounds like your idle is set , Ok.

If you don't know when the carbs were last rebuilt , might want to do that, as well.

Link and sync.

Check the timing . Plugs can be bad and look fine.

If you mean they are burning properly .

Then their probably , ok, as well.

Check all the plug wires , grounds etc.

I'd go over the whole fuel system as well , ie: lines, vent, pump, etc.

Easy to check , and good preventative maintenance.

When you take the motor out of gear the RPM should increase, not decrease.

Something is wrong, most probably the cable adjustment. Have someone move the throttle while you watch what is happening with the throttle linkage.

Ok, that makes a little more sense. I tried to tighten the cable using the knob below the key. Helped a little, i think. Is there any place else the cable can be adjusted? Also, what should the RPM's be in the idle postition?

The idle info. I posted is from my manual.

As far as the idle rpm's , in neutral .

Thats a hard one at least for me. As mine will idle slow enough to almost die.

That is with the warm up lever all the way down.

The 600-700 , is with the engine warm , in forward.

If you put it in gear and pull back throttle to where , it clicks .

This is where the idle rpm's , are to be 600 - 700 .

I'd start with a link and sync. , and go from there.

Adjust the cable at the motor.

Thanks again, played with the cable in the driveway and it seemed to make a difference. I will make final adjustments at the lake.

Great Forum!
