Hello all, I got a 1970 Johnson outboard motor at 60 HP. Yesterday i took it out it dies on me after it ides for like 5 mins. The motor runs fine if i'm cursing around but soon as i puts in N it will die out after fews mins, also lots of white smoke very heavy smell of fuel. I then disconnect the fuel line and starts right back up and idel until all the fuel burns out. does this ever happens to anyone? and also any suggestion what i should do and check thanks all in advance.

White smoke is not good. Could be a blown head gasket as water has gotten into your cylinders. Pull all the plugs and see if one is a lot cleaner than the others.

i pull all the plugs out it looked clean, it's only wet because it's running so rich. I will try to adjust the 3 slow speed mixture see if that does anything. I know it's probably better adjust them when i'm on the water, but i really have no time to take it down the shore again this week. Would the ears be good enough for such adjustment?

They will get you close. If you set the idle on muffs count on the rpms being less when you get it in the water. I believe you want around 650 - 700 on the water so you might set them around 700 to start with on work from there when you get on the water next. Do a search from the top of the page for Joe Reeves great post on how to set these.

well i will try to adjust the motor today. I will post the result later. I have another question i know i'm going off topic here, was i suppose to use NGK plugs or Champion plugs? i'm using NGK plugs part # B7HS i didn't measure the gap yet. Just got the boat fews weeks ago, the guys said he spend $500 to have the motor service not long ago for tune up. Thanks all for the suggestion.

well i just try test the motor, it's still doing the same thing, I see a lot of fuel dripping out of all 3 caburator after 20 mins of idle. I thne shuts it off and turn it back on it will run for less then a min and dies out. No luck after that. i turn the adjustment screw all the way to clock wise that's suppose to lean it out right? no clue what's my next step.
