Motor revs up but doesn’t go anywhere?

Hello all. This past weekend I was fishing and my Mariner 25hp was running good the whole time. Well I got 2 buddies on the boat and the 3 of us decided to all sit in the back while we drive to see how high we can get it to plane. That ended up being my downfall as I was giving it gas going like 15mph I full throttled it and then we stopped moving while the motor revved to the moon. After that the motor would only move forward when close to idle speed and then when I would give it more then a quarter throttle it would rev to the moon again and not move anywhere. Acting like I’m revving it in neutral. Reverse works fine. Did the clutch go out? With the motor off and putting it into forward gear the propeller will spin and with each spin it’ll make a clicking noise. As opposed to when I put it in reverse gear the propeller won’t budge which is how I assume it’s supposed to be. Is this gonna be an expensive repair if I do it my self? Did the clutch go out? Thanks for the help.

Suspect the heavy load was enough to spin the prop hub.
Try another prop like Racerone suggested.

Yep, sounds like a spun hub. Time to visit your "prop shop."

Not the same set up as what you might find on a 25 HP -----Try another prop.----Post the results.

Yours is probably more like this, non-user serviceable

Ok. I’ll have to get another prop but I took it off and looked at the splines in the prop and they seem fine.

The problem is the rubber drive hub inside the prop is likely slipping ??-----Splines do not fail.

If you can find a shop that still does this.----Yes , they use a hefty hydraulic press to remove / install a new hub.----But today the offshore factories can stock dealer shelves with props.----Often for less than what it costs to refurbish one locally.

Hey so I took the prop off and I put it in forward gear and when I turn the prop shaft it makes a click sound. It looks like fishing line got tangled in there too. When I put it in reverse it stays locked. Thoughts? And that’s a picture of the side of the prop with whatever numbers those are.

Yes ----In forward gear it will click if turned CLOCKWISE and lock the other way and that is a fact.---- Somehow I think you seem doubtful or unwilling to believe it can an issue with the prop !

You can get that prop for about 50-60 bucks. Look up how to tell if prop is slipping to confirm its the prop ( which it probably is ) or take it to a shop that's your options..

I think it could be the prop I just thought it was odd that the shaft will turn in gear since it wouldn’t in reverse. I’ll do a test and confirm if it’s slipping.
