Hi guys
My engines is leaking oil into the bildge and I really cant see where it is coming from but it's a pretty good leak 1 hour I lost about a quart I fill it back at. The dock did not run it and the next day I was still full so I think that would rule out a rusted oil pan I replace valve cover gasket that is dry I saw a little on the side cover so I replace the side cover gasket. I did notice a little near the fuel pump. Can the fuel pump gasket leak oil ? Thanks in advance and motor is a mercruiser 470 170 hp 2 barrel carb

Yes if it has a mechanical fuel pump it could leak oil around the gasket. I would clean all areas of the motor and then run it up. Get in there with a flash light and mirror and really start looking for where the oil is coming from. It is best to actually see the oil coming from the engine...That way your not just guessing at which parts to replace.

auto parts sore has engine oil dye you can add, and you can buy a cheap ultra violet lite, did that for my 470, hard to find an oil leak, with clean oil and a shinny black motor, lite and oil additive together was around $12

clean the bilge, then fire up the motor. at sign of first drop, use flashlight, mirror, or your cellphone camera to look above the drip.

A quart an hour, that is a bit for a small leak. When my 470 started leaking that much oil, it turned out to be the rear main seal. Hope yours turns out better.

I'm thinking the same thing. rear main seal. If you change the main seals I would do the mains and rods at the same time.

Hi guys
So I finally was able to start the engine and ran it with my phone making a video I saw no oil leak the only leak was from the lifter access cover on side of the motor I had put a new gasket on however still has a leak do you think a little rtv on the cork gasket will work also the side cover has mercruiser on the cover is that supposed to be upside down or right side up not sure if that even matters but my friend has a gm 250 and his cover was upside down just putting that out there as always any help is greatly appreciated thanks
