Motor Mounting Height

I have been told by several other boaters that my outboard motor is mounted to low on the transom and that I should raise it up for better overall performance. Currently the cavitation plate on the outboard (50 HP) is about 1 1/2 inches below the keel (bottom) of the boat. Is this OK or should it be flush with the bottom. Any and all comments would be appreciated.

Re: Motor Mounting Height

Not okay, Ted.

The anti-ventilation plate (often called a cavitation plate) should be at keel level to 1.5" above it.

Exact optimum height is a case by case matter and needs trial and error to establish.

Good luck. :)
