I am looking for guidance on mounting my 20 HP Mercury Outboard on the stern of my 30 foot catamaran. I'm trying to find out of how far away from the hull the engine must be mounted to provide room for the motor to be tilted back when not in use. Do I need to have the mount fabricated or is there one off the shelf that could do the job.

Thanks in advance for your advice.

Welcome to iboats.

It is really hard to give advice on this, without seeing the boat.

Can you provide several good photos of the mounting location?

Thanks for the reply. I have attached a picture to this post of the stern of the boat where I want to mount the motor. The motor is currently mounted in the center of the cockpit inside the rectangular boxed area to the right of the cabin door. Thanks again for your help.

I'm having a hard time envisioning mounting a motor to the rear of the cockpit area, that will allow it to tilt.
The setback would need to be somewhere around 15" or so, and you have that crossbeam between the 2 hulls.

Perhaps you could mount to the crossbeam, but I don't know if it is strong enough.
Then, it would be near impossible to operate from the cockpit.

I'm sure you are looking for something custom fabricated to fit your application.

I am thinking that the crossbeam will have to be removed to allow room for the engine to be raised. It was installed by a previous owner. I'm wondering if I could find or have fabricated a aluminum or steel mount that was a 12 x 14 rectangle about 8 inches high. The engine would be secured to the 12 inch side and the other 12 inch side would be bolted to the transom about the same height as the crossbeam (which will be removed) and snug up to the railing that's about half way up the transom (see pic). I know I'll have to figure out exactly how high off the water the top of the mount must sit for the prop to be at the right location under the water.

What do you think?
