i have a 1967 40hp evinrude ,engine just perrs like a cat while you idle but when you go across the lake it stats jerking like you are boating thru real foot lake and hitting every stump around
Sounds like your motor is dis-engaging from gear, then re-engaging, repeatedly. Your shift linkage may need adjusting, or your clutch dog in the lower unit may be worn beyond use and need replacing. Check your lower unit oil for an unusually large amount of metal shavings. You should be able to re-adjust the linkage and cables with the help of a decent manual.
