Hi I am new to this forum but I have been observing on here for about 6 months.I hope someone can take a moment to help me out.I have an 84 Johnson 70 hp that idles at 2500 rpm on the muffs.I have cleaned the carbs and disconnected the throttle linkage to make sure the butterflies are closing all the way, compression is 118 on all 3 cylinders and all three have spark.I have replaced fuel lines that were old where I thought it may be sucking air.I am new to outboards so if someone has some pointers I would so greatly appreciate it,thanks for your time.

Is the timer base linkage moving all the way back to the idle position, is the idle screw bottomed out?

Well I went out and checked what you said and when I did the engine swap from 88 50 hp johnson to 84 70 hp johnson I did not adjust the throttle cable.I adjusted the cable untill the timing base set against the idle set screw ,when I fired it up it came down to 1000 rpm.It was smoking a lot and smelled real rich.I gave it gas and it seemed very sluggish.I noticed the timing base is pretty hard to move maybe thats how its suppose to be?Not sure where to go from here maybe the plugs are bad or is there a way to lean out the fuel or maybe the timing is still off?Thank you for your response and maybe you can further help me to get this thing set right.

I think your carbs are non-adjustable so there are no low speed needles to adjust, how did you set the float levels when you had the carbs apart? The timer base should move easily and not bind. What plugs are you running and what condition are they in.

The plugs are Champion QL77JG4 I think im gonna go ahead and get new ones in the morning.I did not adjust the floats from the position they were in,maybe I need too.Im not feeling real confident about the timing base adjust I may have a problem there if you say it is suppose to move freely,it felt pretty stiff.I will recheck it tomorrow and follow up on here.Is there a certain brand of plug I should run in it?What fuel mixture should I run in this engine,I put 5 gallons of gas and a half a quart of two cycle oil in it now just to get it going.Seems like a lot of oil now that I think about it,do you think that may be affecting it?

Those are the correct plugs. Your fuel ratio should be 50:1, one pint of oil to six gallons of gas. Your mixture should be fine, might smoke a little, but it woun't hurt anything.

You have to remove the float bowels, invert the carb body. The float should be parallel to the carb body.

One of the floats were off and I adjusted it.Still seems to be running rich and popping fuel out when running. There is also a little fuel puddling in th bottom of the carbs ,does this sound normal or should I adjust the floats some more?
