It doesn't have gears. It has a speed control which is an electrical device. Depending on how old it is, it may even have speed coils located in the motor housing. Cost to repair depends on what's wrong. $75 bucks is too much to pay for a non-functional motor (at least that's my opinion). On the other hand it may be nothing more than the speed control handle slipping which may cost only a buck or two to fix. You either walk away or take your chances.
