Motor Flushing

I have a 1975 45HP chrysler. When I connect my flush kit to the lower unit to flush out the salt, I am not getting any water flow through the motor. When I am running the boat in the water, I get water flow. I am attaching my flush kit to the screened vents on the lower unit. Is there somewhere else I should be supplying water to flush this motor?

Re: Motor Flushing

I am assuming that by flushing you are using something similiar to muffs on the lower water intake. If so you need to start the motor. If the water impeller is not spinning the water will not go through the engine even with the pressure of the garden hose.

Well....I guess I should have given more detail. You are correct, I was using the muffs on the lower unit attached to a garden hose. I did start the motor. I let it run for about 30 seconds. I didn't see water coming out so I shut off the motor. I even tried putting the motor in gear and still no water.

thanks for your replys.

Re: Motor Flushing

My chrysler is an old 45 hp. It does not have a thermostat. I doubt if yours does. If it dosent it has to be the water pump or something is blocking the water flow. If you take the lower unit off check the impeller real good. Make sure all the fins are intact. My last impeller looked fine until I noticed the metal like nut in the middle lost its glue joint to the rubber. When the shaft was spinning the nut would spin but the rubber would not.

Take your garden hose and slide it on the tube that connects to the top of the water pump. If water comes out the top then something is wrong with your water pump.

Again, thanks for you help. I guess I need to go get that Clymer manual you were telling me about. Outside of changing spark plugs and general maintenance, I have not attempted any motor/lower unit repairs. Is dropping the lower unit and replacing the water pump on these motors very difficult? Is there a lower unit seal kit that I should go ahead and buy?

One other thing I would suggest. Make sure you have a good seal around the muffs. Try some rubber tape to seal the edges. This will help force the water up thru the motor. It is very hard to get these water pumps primed without the motor in the water where the water line is above the waterpump. You may also want to try to get a trashcan that you can set the lower unit in and fill with water above the water pump.
