Re: Motor Flushing

The flush kit looks like ear muffs. It should be two rubber suction cups with a hose attachment on one side. Place the cups over the water pick up holes on the lower unit, be sure the cups are centered properly over the holes. Turn the hose on and check for kinks in the hose. Start the motor and check to make sure its pumping water. Don't engage the motor in gear and don't rev it beyond 2000 rpm.

Re: Motor Flushing

I assume you're flushing at season end, as it makes no sense to flush after each use. At season end, I tilt my 1983 J75 up, put a plastic barrel in place and lower the engine. Fill barrel leaving hose on in barrel, and run for as long as you like, doing whatever you do to de-commission.

After each use, merely let it idle for a while to cool down, then leave in upright position. All OBs are self-draining in the vertical position.

Re: Motor Flushing

If you use your boat in salt water or intertidal waters, it's recommended to flush the motor after every use. If used in fresh water, it wouldn't added much value ......

Re: Motor Flushing

As Jilly says, seasonal flushing is enough if you run in fresh water.

But if you run in salt, or even brackish water, it is vital to flush thoroughly after every outing.

Goes to show that it pays to make sure of the facts before giving advice!
