motor flush ... additional Q

The yamaha I have has a removeable hose fitting that can be attached directly to a hose for flushing. Water comes out the lower unit, pee hole, prop, etc. Is this providing enough water to start the motor and run safely or are the muffs better attached to the water intake on lower unit?

Also, I generally just run the motor for 4 to 5 min, shut down and then just let the hose run - sounds like i've not been getting out all the saltwater - what is the downside to this?

spete-as a Yamaha dealer, i know for a fact you should NOT run your engine on THAT connection-run the motor ONLY WITH MUFFS. reason being the impeller is not lubricated with the attached fitting and you'll burn it up. impeller only gets lubed with muffs ! :D

wow thanks Z that's good to know ... I just assumed that it had the onboard flush out hose for that purpose and since water was coming out all the right places i was covered. Is the flush with the motor's onboard flush hose not getting into the head ... must it run and let the thermostats to open to get all salt out?

Also, my motor is a '98 115 inshore model with low water pick-up ... do you know of a special muff that will fit that intake?

Thanks for the feedback

for what it's worth, my johnson manual states that the hose attachment is for flushing the engine when you can't run the motor. use the muffs when the flush and run. the upper attachment can be used if you keep the boat in salt water, but want to flush between uses.
