About a month or so ago my 4 hp tohatsu motor fell into the water as I was running it.
I got it back after being in the water about 1 minute, with in 3 hours I had drained the oil, and flushed it with a mix of gasoline and oil 3 times then replaced the oil with the correct oil.
I tried to start it and it would not crank, it only backfired out of the carb.
Some one said that the connecting rod was probably bent. So, I have taken the motor apart and the connecting rod seems fine.
Here is a video of the connecting rod.

The connecting rod seems straight with no bends. The action is smooth and the motor does not seem to have any rust in it.
There is a build up of carbon or something like it on the piston head. Here is a video of the head of the piston.

Sorry for the screeching noise, that is coming from a wide format printer right behind me.
The motor is about 1 year old with 25-35 hours on it.
I am going to be ordering a gasket kit for the motor to reassemble it. I am also going to be going back to the 4hp carb,, I had put a 6hp carb on it, and as I run this on my canoe, its just to much power. And I know that the 4hp carb is clean because it was in a box on the shelf when the motor went into the water.
I have the service manual, and will be following the instructions on reassembling the motor, but I wanted to ask your advise, is there any think that I need to lookout for when I put it back together.
Also, back to the original problem with the backfiring.
What kinds of problems cause a coughing/backfiring out of the carb were a clear fluid with soot in it lightly sprays out of the carb. The back firing only happened about every third or fourth pull of the starter rope. The amount of fluid that would spray out when it backfired was only about 2 or 3 total drops, but in a mist.
