Motor Fell in the water.

About a month or so ago my 4 hp tohatsu motor fell into the water as I was running it.

I got it back after being in the water about 1 minute, with in 3 hours I had drained the oil, and flushed it with a mix of gasoline and oil 3 times then replaced the oil with the correct oil.

I tried to start it and it would not crank, it only backfired out of the carb.

Some one said that the connecting rod was probably bent. So, I have taken the motor apart and the connecting rod seems fine.

Here is a video of the connecting rod.

The connecting rod seems straight with no bends. The action is smooth and the motor does not seem to have any rust in it.

There is a build up of carbon or something like it on the piston head. Here is a video of the head of the piston.

Sorry for the screeching noise, that is coming from a wide format printer right behind me.

The motor is about 1 year old with 25-35 hours on it.

I am going to be ordering a gasket kit for the motor to reassemble it. I am also going to be going back to the 4hp carb,, I had put a 6hp carb on it, and as I run this on my canoe, its just to much power. And I know that the 4hp carb is clean because it was in a box on the shelf when the motor went into the water.

I have the service manual, and will be following the instructions on reassembling the motor, but I wanted to ask your advise, is there any think that I need to lookout for when I put it back together.

Also, back to the original problem with the backfiring.

What kinds of problems cause a coughing/backfiring out of the carb were a clear fluid with soot in it lightly sprays out of the carb. The back firing only happened about every third or fourth pull of the starter rope. The amount of fluid that would spray out when it backfired was only about 2 or 3 total drops, but in a mist.

Re: Motor Fell in the water.

I have been searching online for a gasket kit for this motor. I believe that it is a MFS5B, but I will know for sure when I get back home, I will post the model number later this evening.

Thanks
Mike

Is it a 2 or 4 stroke horse, when engine fell into water, was it fresh or salt water ? Did you rinse with fresh water complete engine, flywheel area included before internal cleaning was done ? Was drowned carb properly disassembled and cleaned inside ? If engine was dropped to water while being on, could have electric pulser, ignition, CD, or plug issues. How did it fell ? You didn't tie engine to boat, right ?

Gotta love google translater. Always like Commander's responses because he is always ready to help, but google, or whatever translation mechanism he is using makes for interesting stuff. Like 4 stroke horse and tying enging to boat. I have to be nice to Commander or I may have to go to Belleivue.

Kidding aside, he is asking the right questions. Likely you undertook an needless teardown, but good for experience. I'm guessing a fuel system problem, but ignition system can do that as well.

Re: Motor Fell in the water.

The power head gasket set you needs depends on model and serial, but if you have SN 023742XE and up F6B/5B/4B, you need 3AS871210M POWER HEAD GASKET SET 4B/5B/6B, $47.39. The kit for earlier models is a few dollars more. Any dealer, including some forum members -- including me -- can get one to you.

A common "stopped instantly while running" problem is that you may have sheared the magneto key, causing the ignition to fire out of time. Also, you could have a damaged ignition part due to submersion.

The carbon on the piston head is normal. Likely has similar inside the head, too. I'd clean it off before reassembly. Also go through the carb to ensure any water residue is cleaned out.

Re: Motor Fell in the water.

Thanks for the replies. The motor was tied to the boat, unfortunately the rope was too long and the motor was able to get all the way into the water. I was in the middle of the channel so the water there was about 80 feet deep.

It submerged into the Tennessee river near Chattanooga.

About the motor,, The model number is 3JD(MFS4CD) the serial number is 008097AB It is a 4 stroke outboard that originally had a 4hp carb on it that was swapped out for a 6hp carb.

When I rebuild it, I will be putting the 4hp carb back on it. The 6hp was a little to much on the canoe.

I am at work at the moment so I don't have the service manual with me,, where is the magneto key on the motor?

pvanv, how do I contact you?

Thanks
Mike

Re: Motor Fell in the water.

For the MFS4C, you definitely want 3AS871210M POWER HEAD GASKET SET 4B/5B/6B, $47.39

The mag key is a woodruff key that attaches the flywheel to the crank. If the motor stops suddenly from WOT, the mass of the flywheel could cause it to shear. At this point, test the ignition system, and check that the carb is spotless.

You guys should use PMs. Phone numbers and email addresses aren't cool.
