motor does not shift from reverse to neutral

hi guys hope you can help. i have a 94 johnson v4 that once i put in reverse will not go back to neutral without putting the motor in the forward position. it has no trouble going from forward to neutral. not sure if this is an adjustment i can make or if i have a part failing. thanks in advance for your replies!

Disconnect the shift cable at the engine, shift the engine into forward while manualy turning the prop. Shift the control box into forward. Look to see how the hole in the shift cable lines up with the pin on the shift linkage. Adjust trunnion on shift cable to bring them into alignment favoring full forward on the shift cable. Remember when you shift this engine at rest, you have to manualy turn the prop. If you have someone helping by shifting the engine, or control box, take the key out of the ignition.
