I have a teeny tiny little 460 that i think would be great for an inboard boat. i have never owned a boat so I don't know that much about boats, but from what I have gathered it is possible to drop a crate engine into a boat. I would like to know where to go to find boats with that need a motor. Also I would appreciate any other information regarding my plan.

thanks,

Jed

Well they are not popular as a marine engine..... Ford dropped away from the marine market and so has many others..... the corner on the market ....GM's

I will moved this to another section where it will get a greater response.

Welcome to iboats!!!! :)

There are boats listed for sale right here on this site, boat trader, craigslist, ebay, or just looking around near marinas or water communites for sale signs can find you plenty of potential projects. I don't know if I would try and build a boat around a motor, but anything can be done if you put your mind to it. At least this idea will get you headed in the right direction, and that is to get your first boat. Good luck!

Welcome to iboats Jed..

You can drop any engine into a boat..however the "build" of that "automotive" power is not marine.. there are differences..

You take your small 460 in first gear @ high rpms all day and see where that will get you for 4 months..

Boats dont have 4 speed auto/manual selections..its all or nothing..

You will blow an automotive block Fast when put in boats..

YD.

PS. I can consider there are some kinda mods that you can do to it.. .. currently checking with my special friend on that one atm...but from what he said..no auto in boats..

Hello again ..

Just talked ..

No auto engine in boats..

He says do not swap auto for marine engines...

I had a jet boat with a 460 back in the early 80s.....I have put automotive engines in marine applications a bunch of times.

Change the CASTING plugs to bronze ones, flame arrestor on the duel quads, a flash suppressor on the alternator, a Mallory distributor or aircraft magneto

a couple of other mods and a few hundred man hours of custom ship work..

Re: motor but no boat

Jed, As the others have said, there are special Marinized parts for inboard boat motors. Water cooled exhaust manifolds are normally used. Marine specific carbs, fuel pumps, starters, ignitions, spark arresters and charging systems are required. These things are all bolt on, so if that can be sourced, they can easily be integrated. Most Marine engines use a special cam for better low end power. You will also need to source a marine transmission and engine coupler compatable with that motor.

Re: motor but no boat

it sounds like this is something that I can really do. is there a special name or something for a boat that is missing a motor and nothing else. I guess if you don't "winterize" you can ruin the motor because the water inside freezes, expands, and cracks the block. This is probably my best source of boats with no motors. is there anywhere else to look? this is an awsome forum and you guys really know what your talkin about.

I'm not familiar with inboard boats so it may not be that big of a hassle. On I/O boats, you will have many issues. The manifolds are hard to come by even used. The coupler can no longer be bought at all, you would have to send a chevy one to be modified to fit the 460. The people that have the 460 are doing their best to switch to chevy 454's. Fords are not used at all in I/O boats any more. If your plan was an I/O your in for an expensive lesson.

Marine engine differences: cam, headgasket and core plugs.

The internals of boat engines are pretty much the same as auto engines. The only difference is the cam grind (very similar to a trucks), headgasket is a material that won?t rust and core plugs are brass so they won?t rust.
Pistons, crank, rods etc. are the same.

Accessories (starter, alternator etc.) like popeye mentioned are different (their sparks are suppressed to minimize explosion potential). But if you did buy a boat with a blown engine, you would be able to use the ones off that block.
