1990 V-200 2.4L merc with 1983 ranger 375v 18'. My S/N has been altered, but I know its C239552 and below for parts, anyway my problem. When I took it out today with a new prop 21p Tempest, it would not get going. As soon as I gave it to much throttle it sounded like it was choking and had no power (around 2000-2800rpms). It Idles fine, I revved it up to 3000rpm to test it today after I got back to the dock, and that sounded good. When I bought the boat it had a 26p chopper prop and I could run it but it took about 10 sec to get on plane and ran at 4500 rpms. So (on vacation) I bought a 21p aluminum prop that made it die before I even got going, so I bought the tempest thinking it was going to work.

Could it be the timing (runs fine when not under load). some kind of exhaust problem with the prop. I just don't know what it could be. Any Thoughts

That 26 is an awful lot of prop, bogging the motor to 4500 WOT is a sure way to an early death. This motor is happy between 5500- 6000.

Bogging and not gaining RPM between 2500 2800 is often a sign of a failing stator high side windings, HOWEVER< because of that NO RETURN on electrical parts I really stress testing and proving any fault before spending any money.

A DVA meter or a DVA Adapter to use with any Vol/Ohm meter is required to prove what is going wrong.

You should be able to buzz that 26 pitch chopper up into the 6000's if its working right, Any 2.4/200 half worth its salt on a bass boat could spin a chopper to redline.

High speed coil on the stator or dirty/misadjusted carbs . Either one will do it.

I've went through the carbs 3 times im pretty sure they are correct, not clogged, and it idles at high speed great. Well thats good to know, I prob should of kept the chopper then. Compression is 120 on the top 4, 112 on bottom 2 cylinders.
What part am I looking at or both. 12 or 15 hopefully not the $400 one . I'll take that off test it and look for dark spots.

I should prob check the regulator too?, that may of made the stator go bad. Thats what I read

A bad regulator can cause high RPM problems.

Disconnect the two yellow wires and retest, if it runs well then just replace the Reg.

You really need to learn how to test correctly, otherwise you could replace unnecessary parts and still have the problem.
