Motel booking frustrations...

Family and I are planning a trip to CT next week and in preparation for that trip I ventured online to a popular hotel/motel chains website. I quickly found the motel in PA where I have stayed before and was able to choose a room from the online selection. I went through the process of entering my personal info and credit card info and clicked "submit".

An order summary screen comes up and I notice the total estimated charges to be $599.xx. (don't remember the cents). WTH? I look closer to find that I had somehow reserved 9 rooms!

This is where I enter the twilight zone...

I make a few clicks on my computer to get to a screen where it gives the option to change/cancel your reservation...I click on that. It brings up a screen where each room is listed individually with a check box next to each one (instructions say to remove check mark to delete room...I do that on 8 of them and click the "proceed" button...gives me an error message that the website cannot process the command at this time, blah, blah, blah.

I call the 877 number listed on the website and speak to a female with a slight accent and explain to her that I just made reservations online and somehow, unintentionally, reserved 9 rooms instead of just one. She kindly acknowledges that she understands and proceeds to tell me that she is happy to help me correct the issue and to do so she will have to cancel the current reservation and create a new one with only one room.

After a minute or two of silence (I assume she is typing on her computer) she responds that the reservation is cancelled and then she confirmed the check in date and number of nights...few more moments of silence...then she comes back with "I'm sorry, sir, but there are no rooms available for that date at this time" WTH? I calmly explained to her that I thought that would be highly unlikely, being that the cancellation just made 9 rooms available. She stuck to her story - the computer does not show any rooms available at this time. Again I pointed out the fallacy in her logic, but to no avail. I declined the offer to book at another motel location and advised her I would be contacting another motel chain.

I really like the motel, so I swallow my pride and call the motel directly. A nice young woman asks for my check in date, and, low and behold, they have rooms available! I successfully book a room for $11 more than the online price (I did not tell her about the experience I just had, at that point my blood pressure was high enough).

Just wanted to give a big, sarcastic "thank you" to the nice, ignorant customer service rep I had the pleasure of dealing with at the 877 number.

Thanks for letting me vent...

Pleased it all worked out fine.
I have been wondering for a while now if all this technology we have is actually up to the task.
No doubt the service rep was quoting the facts as she had them, yet they were not accurate.
I have gone back to dealing direct with people where practical, and avoiding the net if possible.

Cheers

Yes , the age of technology bites you in the rear end once again !!!!
I book on line a lot on line for my business travels and one mistake or error in the process can lead to untold frustration to correct it.
It is far easier to give your money to services and businesses than to try and get it back again !!

Car rental places are like that too. They totally rely on their database to tell them what they have available. Enterprise's on-line reservation system will book a reservation for you at your chosen location without knowing the actual inventory. I learned that the hard way.

BTW, you wouldn't happen to picked the # of room from a drop down box and then use the scroll button to move down the page?

If you went to the Chains website it is possible that the local hotel closed booking..
I work at a hotel and things like this happen. We get notifications that people book online. This is done through a 3rd party. The 3rd part has the ability to overbook a hotel. Because most of the time there will be cancellations.

They could have gotten the 9 room reservation and the hotel closed bookings for the online reservations. After your room is canceled, it now looks like it's full. The online CS can't see how many rooms are booked. Just how many are available.

You might want to call the hotel directly. Depending on special events and time of year, calling the hotel directly can give you a better rate.. Oh, don't take the 1st rate they give you. Most of the time the 1st rate is inflated.. Ask for AAA, ARP, or a Corporate/Business discount, Military if you have one.

Always call the hotel directly. I worked at a hotel in college and we were told to never give accurate information on the number of rooms we have left. It really is kind of a racket. All the hotels in Raleigh did a "call around" each night to find out how many rooms each has left. This does two things. If we are overbooked we can send them to a hotel with a room. It also helps set the rates of the rooms. If all of the hotels are booked, a room is a high comoditity and you can charge more.

One thing I'll say to everyone is no matter what kind of headaches you've had with getting a room booked, or a reservation being lost, DO NOT take it out on the hotel employee in front of you. Most likely they had nothing to do with the mix up. If you treat them like crap, you're going to get treated like crap. If you're nice and understanding, most of the time the employee will take care of you. ie. comp a room, upgrade you, put you up in a nicer hotel.

I say this from experience. The hotel I worked at was a very large worldwide company, and our manager was notorious for overbooking each night. He'd then leave before all of the business travelers would show up and me and my coworkers (who happened to be roomates) to deal with some disgruntled travels. The one's that blew up at us, got sent to the LaQuinta. The one's that were nice and understanding got sent to the really high end hotel next to us. (comped of course)

Well I ordered a laptop with a touch screen 4 weeks ago.

Finally got it after waiting 4 miserable weeks........AND it has every feature I wanted, BUT NO TOUCH SCREEN.

I'm a little frustrated too right now.
