Re: Most reliable diesel

Since your post is a bit vague, the only answer I have is: They are all as reliable as the maintenance that is give them. They are all man-made by companies that have made a few compromises between longevity and profit.

and next we need a few clarifiers

Marine diesel for WHAT
Genset, de-watering pump, fire supression unit, propulsion, auxiliary power?

If for propulsion, are we pushing a yacht, a trawler, a run about, a sail boat, a barge, a tug boat?

Re: Most reliable diesel

To explain my answer.

Here in Europe, the Volvo 41 diesel engine is very popular, and doesn't seem to have any design failures. Stay away from the old MD32 and be suspicious to the new D-series. A lot of D-series engines has had problems.

The 41 series is from a time before electronics took over, the mechanic had been improved to a reliable level, and power output was acceptable.

Avoid the 41 A-model, unless you like black smoke on start up.

They really can smoke big time on the first 1/2 minute of running!

A guy at the local marina had one of these engines in his boat, Oh lord, when he did a cold start......
