Hi guys.

Sunfish/bream (bluegills, shellcrackers, etc.) are a fun little fish for kids to catch (big kids too, on a fly rod!)

My question is: nationwide, what’s the very best lake/pond for sunfish fishing, in your opinion?

Let’s limit this discussion to waterways with either “normal-sized” or "larger sunfish," and not ones with only “real tiny stunted sunfish."

Thanks!

Dale D.

Well, I still think in almost every species that it has in it except stripers that you can not beat somewhere on the Santee Cooper chain for any type of fishing. It is not exactly my favorite place to fish for bream but if you look at numbers of decent sized fish and fishability for the WHOLE family whether shore bound or boating I don't think it can be beat.
If you would like to know a couple of favorites and why I will tell you. Bushy Park off the cooper river because of the overall size of the fish. Edisto River because it is a beautiful backwater river that still has some red****** left. But my #1 Favorite is the Saluda river tail race. The fish are not big but they are fiesty and colorful. They hit flies with reckless abandon and the river is almost as pretty as any mountian stream. Also as a bonus during the weekend (best fishing due to generation schedule) numerous people come to the river to cool off and several of these wear bikinis.

Red****** is a type of fish with a redchest. I buess since the clinical term ****** deals with a female part that gets gets implants it won't allow it. Funny since it is the name of a sunfish (bream)

Low lake, near Winton, Minnesota.

In 91' did good. In Aug 92' hit a school at dusk and maxed out in about 45 minutes. (I think the limit then was 35) Every one of them was way larger than a man's hand. The bobber did not even get a chance to stand :)

Our two buddies at the other end of the lake maxed out about the same time.

Cleaned "gills" for two hours. Awesome! We couldn't move after the fish fry that night! (may have been the beer too).

Have not been there in several years, so I hope it's still good.
